The short answer for Sha Tin
Yes, there are Bitcoin ATMs in Sha Tin: CoinHero lists two 24-hour, buy-only machines in Sha Tin itself (Chuen Fai Centre and Sha Tin Centre), plus one each in Tai Wai and Ma On Shan, and CoinUnit adds machines in Fo Tan and Ma On Shan. If you need to sell crypto for cash, skip the machines and go to one of One Satoshi's two staffed counters, at Shatin Plaza or at Kings Wing Plaza 2 in Shek Mun.
That split, many machines that only take your money and very few places that give money back, is the pattern across the whole of the New Territories. Sha Tin is a slightly better-served version of it. It is one of only a few new towns with a walk-in counter at all, and it has two: one at Sha Tin station on the East Rail line and one at Shek Mun on the Tuen Ma line, with an easy change at Tai Wai between them. What it lacks is any machine that sells. Of CoinHero's eight buy-and-sell units territory-wide, none sits in Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Fo Tan or Ma On Shan.
Everything below was checked against the operators' own location lists on 30 September 2026. Those lists change almost weekly, because laundromats close, malls renovate and machines move. Open the operator's live map before you get on the train, especially if you are carrying HK$10,000 in notes.
One Satoshi: the two people-staffed counters
One Satoshi (一宗比特幣) is the largest chain of walk-in crypto counters in Hong Kong, and Sha Tin is the only district outside Kowloon and Causeway Bay where it runs two branches. We cover the chain as a whole in our One Satoshi review. Here is what matters locally.

Shatin Plaza, Level 3
Shatin Plaza is the mall One Satoshi pairs with Exit A of Sha Tin station. It is not New Town Plaza, although the malls around the station are joined by footbridges and it is easy to walk into the wrong one. Commuters coming off the East Rail line at Sha Tin station can reach the counter in a few minutes without going down to street level. Hours run 11:30 to 20:00 on weekdays and to 19:00 at weekends, which makes it realistic after work for anyone commuting back from Kowloon Tong or Admiralty.
The Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong's buying guide, which is undated and partly stale, gives the chain's minimum ticket as HK$1,000 and says personal information is collected above HK$80,000. Treat both as indicative rather than current. Bring your HKID anyway, because the threshold is the shop's choice, not the law's, and it can change on the day.
Shek Mun, Kings Wing Plaza 2 (closed Wednesdays)
The Shek Mun branch is on 1/F of Kings Wing Plaza 2 at 1 On Kwan Street, in the office-and-industrial strip between Sha Tin and Ma On Shan served by Shek Mun station on the Tuen Ma line. It opens later (12:00) and closes later (20:30 on weekdays) than Shatin Plaza, which suits people working in the Shek Mun and Siu Lek Yuen offices. The one trap: it is closed every Wednesday. It is an easy detail to miss when you plan a trip from a search result. If Wednesday is your day, take the Tuen Ma line back to Tai Wai and change to the East Rail line for one stop to Sha Tin, where Shatin Plaza is open.
Before you hand over any cash at either counter, confirm the rate on a screen or on paper, check that the wallet address shown matches the one in your own app, and wait for the transaction to show on-chain before you leave. Bitcoin ATMs in Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Fo Tan and Ma On Shan
Every machine below sits inside a self-service laundromat or a housing-estate shopping centre, which is typical of how Hong Kong operators place kiosks: cheap rent, long hours and staff-free premises. Every CoinHero unit here is marked "buy only" on CoinHero's own list. CoinUnit's page advertises selling in general, but says a sell must be requested through a form rather than done on the spot. Two notes on the list. First, CoinUnit's current Chinese-language locator shows Fo Tan and Ma On Shan but no address inside Sha Tin town centre itself, even though older write-ups mention one. We have not listed a Sha Tin-proper CoinUnit machine because we could not find one on the operator's page. Second, Localcoin, the Australian operator that arrived in 2025, shows "Sha Tin [1]" in its district index, but the district page returned "0 results" when we opened it. We are not publishing an address for it. If you rely on Localcoin, check its live map.
CoinHero's fee schedule applies across its network: 13% plus a fixed HK$100 on BTC, ETH, DOGE and XAUt purchases for unregistered users, falling to 6.5% after registration. The first note must be HK$500 or HK$1,000, so a HK$100 note alone will not start a transaction. The minimum is HK$500 and the unregistered ceiling is HK$100,000. Our CoinHero review goes through registration and what the 13% actually buys you. CoinUnit takes only HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes. A HK$90 + 6.9% fee has been quoted in search snippets, but we could not confirm it on CoinUnit's site.
Which machine for which part of the district
If you live around Tai Wai, the Sun Chui Estate unit is the closest, and you avoid the crowds at the Sha Tin malls. Ma On Shan residents have two options, at Kam Tai Shopping Centre (CoinHero) and at Lee On Shopping Centre (CoinUnit), and can choose between two operators without leaving the Tuen Ma line corridor. Fo Tan has only the CoinUnit unit at Sui Wo Court, on the hillside estate above Fo Tan station. In Sha Tin town centre, the Sha Tin Centre laundromat on Level 3 is the most convenient for New Town Plaza shoppers, because Sha Tin Centre is a short footbridge walk from the station malls.
Not keen on a 13% machine fee?
Card and bank-funded purchases online usually cost a fraction of an ATM spread, and nobody has to carry notes through New Town Plaza.
Machine or counter: what a Sha Tin trip really costs
The decision is mostly about ticket size and direction. For a first purchase of HK$500 to HK$2,000, a machine is quick and anonymous enough, but you pay heavily for the convenience. Above that, the fixed HK$100 matters less and the 13% matters more, and a staffed counter's spread will usually win. For selling, the machine is not an option in this district at all.

If you are cashing out, the cheapest legal route is not in Sha Tin at all. It is an app. SFC-licensed platforms such as OSL and HashKey Exchange let you sell and withdraw HKD to your bank by FPS or bank transfer, and you then withdraw notes from any bank ATM in New Town Plaza. Science Park: Sha Tin's Web3 side, without the cash
Sha Tin's other crypto identity is not retail at all. Hong Kong Science Park, at Pak Shek Kok on the Sha Tin–Tai Po border, is run by HKSTP. In April 2023 it said more than 300 park companies were developing Web3-related technologies, spanning blockchain, AI, digital content and cybersecurity. That figure is three years old. HKSTP has grown since, but we have not found a newer Web3-specific count.
For readers, the practical point is simple. There is no ATM or OTC counter inside the park in any list we checked. Engineers and founders working there who want to buy with cash tend to take the East Rail line from University a couple of stops south to Sha Tin, or head to Tai Po Market, where our Tai Po page lists the nearest machines. For company treasury work, large trades or payroll in crypto, the park's tenants deal with licensed platforms and OTC desks rather than street-level shops. That is covered on our OTC desks page.
The same is true of the Chinese University campus next to University station. Students do ask about it, but every machine we could confirm sits in the town-centre malls and the housing estates, not on campus.
Rules to know before you go
What that means on the ground: the counter you used last month may stop trading, move USDT to "private inquiry only", or close altogether when the law starts. Do not leave a balance with any shop, and do not treat a shop's app or account as a place to store coins. Send what you buy straight to a wallet you control, as explained in our crypto wallets guide.
Carrying cash is the other risk. In our research we found no reported robbery linked to Sha Tin's counters, unlike the knife attacks outside Sheung Wan money changers and at 608 Nathan Road in Mong Kok. The pattern is still the same everywhere: people are watched leaving with bags of notes. Split large amounts, go in daylight, and never agree to meet a "dealer" in a car park or a flat because a Telegram contact said the rate is better. Getting there, and where to go instead
Sha Tin is unusually well connected for cash crypto. The East Rail line runs south to Kowloon Tong and on to Mong Kok East, where the Mong Kok cluster at 608 Nathan Road has more counters and a buy-and-sell ATM on one floor. Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Sha Tin town centre?
Yes. CoinHero lists two 24-hour machines in Sha Tin proper: one in LaundryUp at Chuen Fai Centre on Kong Pui Street and one in Sunshine Laundry on Level 3 of Sha Tin Centre. Can I sell Bitcoin for cash in Sha Tin?
Not at a machine. None of the Sha Tin, Tai Wai or Ma On Shan CoinHero units supports selling. To turn crypto into notes locally you need a staffed counter: One Satoshi's Shatin Plaza shop (Level 3, Exit A) or its Shek Mun branch, which is closed on Wednesdays. The cheaper legal route is to sell on an SFC-licensed platform and withdraw HKD to your bank.
Where can I buy USDT with cash in Sha Tin?
One Satoshi says its shops handle USDT, and both of its Sha Tin district branches are listed on its site. Be aware that since the Stablecoins Ordinance took effect on 1 August 2025, the government has told LegCo that OTC shops are not permitted offerors of stablecoins such as USDT, so availability and posted prices can change without notice.
Is the One Satoshi Shek Mun shop open on Wednesday?
No. One Satoshi's store list marks the Kings Wing Plaza 2 branch in Shek Mun as closed every Wednesday. On other weekdays it opens 12:00 to 20:30, and 12:00 to 19:30 on weekends and public holidays. On a Wednesday, use the Shatin Plaza branch at Sha Tin station (East Rail line, Exit A), reached from Shek Mun by changing at Tai Wai.
Does Hong Kong Science Park have a crypto ATM or exchange counter?
We found no ATM or walk-in counter inside Science Park in any operator list checked in September 2026. HKSTP is an innovation hub, not a retail cash point: in April 2023 it said more than 300 park companies were developing Web3-related technology. For cash, go to Sha Tin or Tai Po Market instead.
Which is cheaper in Sha Tin, the ATM or the shop?
Usually the shop, for anything above a few thousand dollars. CoinHero's published machine fee is 13% plus HK$100 before registration. Walk-in counters work on a buy/sell spread that is typically a few percent, although no systematic public spread data exists. Card or bank-funded purchases on a licensed exchange normally cost less than either.
