Bitcoin ATMs in Wan Chai: laundry machines on Hennessy Road and the city's crypto conference hall

Wan Chai hosts Hong Kong's biggest crypto conferences and one licensed exchange's head office, but its cash points are small, buy-only and tucked into laundromats. Here is exactly where they are.

Yes, you can find a Bitcoin ATM in Wan Chai. Operator sites list four that we could confirm on 30 September 2026: CoinUnit at 87 Hennessy Road, CoinHero at 269 Hennessy Road and 104 Johnston Road, and Localcoin on Lockhart Road. All are buy-focused, three run around the clock, and none pays out cash on the spot. There is no staffed crypto shop we could confirm in Wan Chai itself.

Wan Chai is a district of layers. Down by the harbour sits the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where tens of thousands of people come each year to hear about the future of digital money. A few blocks south, Hennessy Road and Johnston Road run under the tram lines past noodle shops, pawnbrokers, bars and 24-hour laundries, which is where the actual machines are. Up the slope on Queen's Road East, a licensed exchange runs its business from an office tower. This page walks through all three levels. For the wider picture, start with our Hong Kong Island district overview and the city-wide guide to Bitcoin ATMs.

These are listed from west to east, as you would pass them walking from Admiralty. Operator lists change weekly, so open the operator's live map on the day.

The CoinUnit machine at 87 Hennessy Road is the one most people use, because it sits at the western end of Wan Chai within an easy walk of both Admiralty and Wan Chai stations, and it is in a street-level laundromat that stays lit all night. Like every CoinUnit machine it accepts only HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes, so arrive with the right paper. The machine lists BTC, ETH, DOGE, LTC and TRX.

CoinHero's two machines are a little further east. The Kwong Wah Mansion unit is on the first floor of a residential-commercial block on Hennessy Road, which means climbing a staircase from a busy pavement; it is less visible, which some people like and others find uncomfortable at 3am. The Claw Planet machine is in a claw-machine arcade on Johnston Road, the older tram-side street a block south, among the district's surviving tong lau shophouses. Both are buy-only and open 24 hours.

Localcoin, which entered Hong Kong in February 2025, says it has three ATMs in the Wan Chai district, a council area that also takes in Causeway Bay and Happy Valley. We could confirm only one address, at the SOLO building on Lockhart Road, from a search snippet of Localcoin's own location page; the district page itself returned no results when we fetched it. Localcoin describes its fees as "typically ranging from 5% to 8%". That is lower than CoinHero's published rate, but we could not see a live quote.

Two more CoinUnit locations, a LaundrYup at 155 Jaffe Road and a WASHours at 7 Cross Lane, appear in search results as CoinUnit location pages, but both pages returned "not found" on 30 September 2026. We treat them as removed or moved and have not listed them. Coin ATM Radar also carries a Wan Chai entry under a mahjong-club name; we could not open it, so it is unverified.

What a Wan Chai Bitcoin ATM really costs

Fees are where cash machines lose most people. CoinHero's FAQ, checked on 30 September 2026, lists a buy fee of 13% plus a fixed HK$100 for BTC, ETH and DOGE, with a HK$500 minimum and a HK$100,000 cap per transaction before you must register with your ID, a selfie and a fingerprint. Its October 2025 press release had quoted 8.6% plus HK$100, so the rate appears to have risen or to vary by machine. A free membership, nominally worth HK$1,000 a year, halves the ATM fee.

Run the numbers on a typical Wan Chai purchase of HK$2,000 at CoinHero's standard rate. Thirteen percent is HK$260, plus HK$100 fixed, so HK$360 goes before any network fee, leaving about HK$1,640 of bitcoin. At Localcoin's quoted 5% to 8% the same trade would cost HK$100 to HK$160, if that range applies. CoinUnit does not publish a fee on its site; a search snippet quoted HK$90 plus 6.9%, which we could not confirm. The only reliable way to know is to compare the machine's price with a live exchange price on your phone before you insert a note. Our CoinHero review covers the membership maths.

Machine fees are charged on top of the price you see; always compare with a live exchange rate first.

If you want cash back rather than coins, Wan Chai is the wrong district. None of the four machines offers instant cash-out. CoinHero's nearest buy-and-sell machine is its flagship at 1A Canal Road East in Causeway Bay, which charges 13% plus HK$25 to sell. Selling on a licensed platform and withdrawing by FPS is usually much cheaper; see our guide to selling crypto for Hong Kong dollars.

HK$360 on a HK$2,000 purchase?

Card purchases on an online platform usually cost a small fraction of a machine's 13% plus fixed fee.

The Hopewell Centre question: are there crypto shops in Wan Chai?

Search for crypto shops in Wan Chai and you will quickly find Hopewell Centre, the round 64-storey tower on Queen's Road East. The source is a widely shared May 2025 piece from Wu Blockchain in which a lawyer described visiting several OTC counters there: Crypto HK at "L1/51", Tian Tian Crypto one floor up, and ONE GO Crypto Exchange, which dealt mostly in USDT and took Hong Kong dollar and renminbi cash. Other guides have repeated it.

There is a problem. The article places the building "near the Legislative Council, the Government Headquarters and Tamar Park". Hopewell Centre is nowhere near Tamar. Admiralty Centre is, and Crypto HK's own website lists its shop as Shop 51 on the first floor of Admiralty Centre. Our reading is that the visit was almost certainly to Admiralty Centre and the building name was confused. That is our inference, but it is a strong one. In September 2026 we found no crypto counter at Hopewell Centre confirmed by any operator website. If you want a staffed counter, go to Admiralty Centre, one stop west, or to Causeway Bay, one stop east, where One Satoshi and VBIT have shops. Every counter we know of is in our crypto shop directory.

HKVAX and the licensed side of Wan Chai

HKVAX became one of Hong Kong's licensed virtual-asset trading platforms on 3 October 2024. Company directories place it in the Dah Sing Financial Centre at 248 Queen's Road East. It serves clients through online accounts, not a public counter, so do not turn up expecting to trade cash. If you are comparing it with OSL, HashKey and the other licensees, our list of SFC-licensed crypto exchanges sets them side by side with licence dates.

One warning that applies especially here. In July and August 2026 the SFC added lookalike websites impersonating licensed platforms, including DFX Labs and HashKey, to its list of suspicious sites. Scam operations like to borrow the names of real licensees and real addresses. If someone at a Wan Chai bar or conference party offers to get you "priority" onboarding at a licensed exchange for a fee, or sends you a link, check the domain against the SFC register yourself. Our crypto scam guide lists the patterns.

HKCEC: Hong Kong's crypto conference hall

Wan Chai's biggest crypto asset is a building. The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the waterfront hosted Consensus Hong Kong from 10 to 12 February 2026. The organiser reported 11,000 attendees from 122 countries, with senior leadership making up 62% of the crowd. Two months later, from 20 to 23 April 2026, the Hong Kong Web3 Festival returned, organised with HashKey Group. In late August, Bitcoin Asia's conference on 27 and 28 August was listed by its organiser at "HKCC", which appears to refer to the same convention centre, although the organiser's page did not spell it out.

Getting there is easier than it used to be. Exhibition Centre station on the East Rail line opened in 2022 and sits a few minutes' walk south of the halls, connecting directly to Admiralty, Hung Hom and the New Territories. From Wan Chai station, the covered footbridge network runs north across Harbour Road. The machines listed above are 10 to 15 minutes' walk south of the halls.

Advice if you are visiting Wan Chai for a conference

Visitors flying in for a conference week often land wanting to test a Hong Kong payment rail or pick up a small amount of crypto for a demo. Wan Chai's machines will let you do that, but at a price. You will need HK$500 or HK$1,000 notes, which most currency-exchange counters and bank ATMs will give you. You will pay a double-digit percentage at CoinHero, and you will leave with coins in a wallet you should have set up before you left home.

There are better routes. If you are a Hong Kong resident, a licensed exchange such as OSL or HashKey, funded by FPS, is the regulator's recommended route. If you are visiting, many people use an international exchange with a card; our quickest-way-to-buy guide compares the realistic options and their licensing status. Either way, avoid anyone at the venue offering to swap USDT for cash. Since the Stablecoins Ordinance took effect on 1 August 2025, shops cannot offer USDT to the public, and a stranger offering it at a side event has no protection to offer you at all. Our USDT to HKD guide explains the rules.

Where to go next from Wan Chai

Wan Chai sits between Hong Kong Island's two stronger crypto neighbourhoods. One stop west, Admiralty has the Island's quietest staffed counter but no machine. One stop east, Causeway Bay has CoinHero's flagship with a machine that buys and sells, plus One Satoshi, VBIT and several more ATMs within a few blocks. If your goal is a first small purchase, Hennessy Road is fine. If you want to sell, talk to a person, or compare prices across counters, take the MTR one stop east. Going the other way, our Central and Sheung Wan page covers the pier machine and the CBD's offices.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Bitcoin ATM in Wan Chai?

There are several. CoinUnit lists a 24/7 machine at Shop C, G/F, 87 Hennessy Road inside a WASHours laundry. CoinHero lists two buy-only machines open 24 hours: 1/F Kwong Wah Mansion, 269 Hennessy Road, and Claw Planet, Shop F, G/F, 104 Johnston Road. Localcoin lists one at SOLO Wan Chai, 368–374 Lockhart Road. Check each operator's live map before you go.

Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Wan Chai that pays out cash?

None that we could confirm. The CoinHero machines in Wan Chai are buy-only, and CoinUnit handles selling by request rather than instant cash-out. The nearest machine that CoinHero lists as buy and sell is its flagship at 1A Canal Road East in Causeway Bay, about 15 minutes' walk east, which charges 13% plus HK$25 to sell.

Are there crypto shops in Hopewell Centre, Wan Chai?

A May 2025 article named Crypto HK, Tian Tian Crypto and ONE GO in "Hopewell Centre", but described it as next to LegCo and Tamar, which fits Admiralty Centre instead. We found no current, confirmed crypto counter in Hopewell Centre in September 2026. The nearest confirmed shop is Crypto HK in Admiralty Centre.

Can I buy crypto near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre?

Yes, but not inside it. The closest machines are on Hennessy Road, Lockhart Road and Johnston Road, 10 to 15 minutes' walk south of HKCEC. Conference visitors are usually better served by setting up an app or licensed platform before arriving, because ATM fees can reach 13% plus a fixed fee.

Which crypto exchange has its office in Wan Chai?

HKVAX, licensed by the SFC on 3 October 2024, is listed in company directories at Units 1305–06, 13/F Dah Sing Financial Centre, 248 Queen's Road East. It is an office without a public counter; you open an account online. Always check the name and website against the SFC's own register first.

Is it safe to use a Bitcoin ATM in Wan Chai at night?

The machines are in 24-hour laundries and arcades on busy roads, which helps. Risks come less from the street than from scams: never scan a QR code someone else gives you, never buy for a "tax office" or "investment adviser" on the phone, and only insert notes once you have checked the price on screen.
