ZA Bank crypto review: flat illustration of a wallet holding cards and coins

By the HongKongCrypto.asia editorial desk Data checked: September 2026 Updated:

This ZA Bank crypto review has a short answer: if you already bank with ZA, it is the easiest way in Hong Kong to buy a little Bitcoin with HKD, through a platform licensed by the SFC. It is not cheap, it caps you at five large-cap tokens, and you can never move the coins out, so we score it 7.0 out of 10.

We based the score on ZA Bank's own crypto FAQ and fee table, checked in September 2026, plus its launch announcement and press coverage, using the same method as every page in our exchange and platform reviews. We also cover Mox here, because it is the only other virtual bank selling spot crypto and there is no separate Mox page on this site.

Verdict: convenience, at a price

7.0/10
ZA Bank crypto — 7.0 / 10

Licensed bank, licensed partner (HashKey), 24/7 trading straight from your HKD or USD savings and a low HK$500 minimum. Points lost for a 0.8% fee with a HK$15 floor, only five coins, and no way to transfer crypto in or out.

What works

  • Buy from your ZA savings account in HKD or USD, with no separate exchange account or bank transfer
  • Runs through HashKey, an SFC-licensed platform, and sits inside an HKMA-licensed bank
  • Five tokens since 2026: BTC, ETH, SOL, AVAX and LINK
  • Low entry point: HK$500 or US$60 per order
  • Sale proceeds land back in your savings account for normal FPS withdrawal

Watch out for

  • 0.8% platform fee, with a HK$15 minimum that makes small orders cost up to 3%
  • No external crypto transfers in or out, so no self-custody and no moving to another platform
  • Coin range is limited to what HashKey allows retail to trade
  • Promotional 0% periods come and go; the 2026 new-user offer has ended
  • Crypto is not a deposit and is not covered by the Deposit Protection Scheme

A 7.0 still makes ZA a reasonable pick for the right person. Licence scores well because both the bank and HashKey are regulated. HKD rails are as good as they get: the money is already in the account. Total cost and withdrawal freedom drag it down hard. For anyone planning to hold for years, move coins to a hardware wallet or buy often, a full exchange such as those in our HashKey Exchange review or OSL review is the better tool.

How ZA Bank crypto trading works

ZA Bank launched retail crypto trading in November 2024. Its launch announcement called it the first bank in Asia to offer the service, working with HashKey Exchange. Behind the button, ZA acts as the intermediary and places your orders through an omnibus account at HashKey, using the HashKey Pro engine. Hong Kong rules require banks and brokers to partner only with SFC-licensed platforms, which is why every bank crypto service in the city runs through one.

At launch you could trade only Bitcoin and Ether. The current ZA crypto FAQ lists five tokens, BTC, ETH, AVAX, LINK and SOL, for customers in Hong Kong. You activate the service inside the Invest tab; ZA says that can take as little as a minute for existing customers who do not need to supply more information. You then buy by amount, from HK$500 or US$60, and the money comes straight out of your savings balance. When you sell, HKD or USD goes back into savings and can leave by FPS like any other balance.

With ZA, crypto is bought from the same balance you spend from — convenient, but coins stay inside the bank.

ZA Bank crypto fees: what you really pay

ZA's fee table, as shown in its crypto FAQ in September 2026, has two lines. Commission is $0. The platform fee is 0.8% of the trade amount, with a minimum of HK$15 or US$1.99 per order. ZA Perks level 1 and level 2 customers get a lower platform fee of 0.5%, with the same minimum. Trading runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so the fee is the same at 3am on a Sunday as it is at lunchtime on a Tuesday. There is no separate custody fee listed, and no charge for moving HKD into the service, because the money never leaves your ZA account until the order fills.

That is lower than the 1.5% standard rate that press coverage reported when the service launched in 2024, and lower than the figure many comparison sites still repeat, so older articles overstate the cost. On the other hand, 0.8% each way is still several times what licensed exchanges charge. The table below shows how the HK$15 minimum works on different order sizes.

ZA Bank crypto cost at the standard 0.8% platform fee, HK$15 minimum (our calculation from ZA's published table)
Order sizeFee to buyEffective rateBuy + sell (round trip)
HK$500 (the minimum order)HK$15 (minimum fee applies)3.0%HK$30
HK$1,875HK$150.8%HK$30
HK$5,000HK$400.8%HK$80
HK$20,000HK$1600.8%HK$320

The break-even point is HK$1,875: below it, the HK$15 floor applies and your percentage cost rises, peaking at 3% on a HK$500 order. Buying HK$500 every week is therefore an expensive habit, while fewer, larger orders cost the plain 0.8%. Promotions change this picture only briefly. ZA has run several 0% offers for new activations, including one for customers activating between February and June 2026 that waived fees for the first 90 days. That window has closed. Check the in-app fee on the order confirmation screen before each trade.

Paying 3% on a small order?

If you'd rather buy by card on an international exchange, CEX.IO lists spot fees from 0.15%/0.25% and lets you withdraw to your own wallet. Card purchases carry their own fee, and it is not SFC-licensed, so you lose Hong Kong protection.

No transfers in or out: the real trade-off

This is the point many buyers miss until they want to act on it. ZA Bank's FAQ says plainly that it currently does not support external crypto transfers in or out. You cannot send Bitcoin from ZA to a hardware wallet, to a friend or to another exchange, and you cannot move coins you already own into ZA. The only exit is to sell for HKD or USD inside the app.

For a small, long-term position that you are happy to sell back to the bank one day, that may not matter. It matters a lot if you want self-custody, if you want to move to a cheaper platform later, or if you ever need the coins on-chain. It also means you have no way to shop around when you sell: you take ZA's execution and pay the platform fee again. If holding your own keys is the point for you, start with our crypto wallets guide and buy on a platform that allows withdrawals. For selling, our guide to cashing out crypto compares the routes.

ZA Bank vs Mox: the other bank option

Mox, the virtual bank led by Standard Chartered, launched crypto trading in late January 2026, again through HashKey Exchange with HashKey Custody holding the assets. The Mox FAQ now lists three coins, BTC, ETH and SOL, and says only USD can be used to buy. Like ZA, Mox states that it does not support deposits or withdrawals of crypto. The FAQ also says HashKey Custody's protection arrangements cover 100% of client assets in hot wallets and 50% in cold wallets.

On price, Mox charges only a commission, set by your Mox Invest tier. At launch Blockhead reported 1.25% for Basic members falling to 0.5% for Elite; another report gave 1% and 0.4%. We could not confirm the current tiers on a public Mox fee page, so treat those figures as reported. Mox also ran a launch offer of $0 buy commission until 31 August, which has ended.

Put simply, ZA is the better bank option for most people: more coins, HKD trading, and a lower headline fee for anything above about HK$2,000. Mox may suit Elite-tier customers who already hold USD. Neither is a substitute for a real exchange account if you want control of your coins.

Who ZA Bank crypto suits, and who should skip it

ZA suits you if you already use ZA as your main bank, want a small, simple exposure to Bitcoin or Ether without opening another account, and are fine selling back through the app. The five-coin list and HK$500 minimum make it an easy first step.

Skip it if you plan to buy regularly, since the fees add up; if you want to withdraw to a wallet; or if you want tokens beyond the five. Brokers are another middle route: our Futu and PantherTrade review compares Futu, Tiger and Victory, which charge less and in Futu's case allow on-chain transfers. For every option side by side, see our licensed crypto exchanges list and the quickest way to buy crypto guide.

The quiet alternative: a Bitcoin ETF in your securities account

If what you really want is price exposure rather than coins, there is a route many ZA customers overlook. Hong Kong has listed spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs since 2024, and by 2026 there were 11 spot virtual asset ETFs authorised by the SFC, including the Bosera HashKey Bitcoin ETF (3008) and Ether ETF (3009). They trade like any HKEX share during market hours, so you can buy them through a normal securities account, including ZA's own stock trading service. You pay the fund's annual management fee and normal stock trading costs instead of a 0.8% platform fee on each trade. You cannot withdraw coins from an ETF either, but the costs are easier to compare. Our crypto ETF guide lists the tickers and explains the trade-offs, including trading only during HKEX hours rather than 24/7.

One more practical point: because bank crypto services in Hong Kong typically hold client coins through an omnibus account at the partner platform, your statement shows your holdings as a ZA position, not coins at an address you control. Keep your trade confirmations. They record your cost, which you will want for your own records, and our crypto tax guide explains when gains may be taxable in Hong Kong.

How to activate ZA Bank crypto trading

  1. Open or log in to ZA BankYou need a ZA Bank account. New customers open it in the ZA Bank app with an HKID; approval for the investment account generally takes 1–5 business days.
  2. Go to InvestUpdate the app, open the Invest tab and choose "Activate Crypto Trading Services".
  3. Complete the risk and knowledge checksAnswer the virtual-asset suitability questions. ZA says activation can take about a minute for existing customers.
  4. Buy by amountPick BTC, ETH, SOL, AVAX or LINK, enter at least HK$500 or US$60, and check the platform fee on the confirmation screen.
  5. Sell back to savingsWhen you sell, HKD or USD returns to your savings account. Crypto itself cannot be transferred out.

Before you tap buy, remember the maths: under HK$1,875, the HK$15 minimum costs you more than 0.8%. If you are unsure which route fits, the reviews hub scores every option on the same scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is ZA Bank crypto trading safe and legal?

ZA Bank is an HKMA-licensed virtual bank, and its crypto service runs through HashKey, an SFC-licensed trading platform. Trading has been live since Nov 2024, when ZA became the first bank in Asia to offer retail crypto trading. Your crypto is not a bank deposit, so the Deposit Protection Scheme does not cover it, and prices can fall sharply.

What are ZA Bank crypto fees?

ZA Bank's crypto FAQ, checked in Sep 2026, lists $0 commission and a platform fee of 0.8% of the trade amount, with a minimum of HK$15 or US$1.99 per order. ZA Perks level 1 and 2 users pay 0.5%. Earlier coverage quoted a 1.5% standard rate, so check the fee on the order screen before confirming.

Can I transfer Bitcoin out of ZA Bank to my own wallet?

No. ZA Bank's FAQ says it currently does not support external crypto transfers in or out. You can only buy and sell inside the app, and sale proceeds go back to your ZA savings account. If you want to hold coins in your own wallet, you need a platform such as HashKey Exchange or OSL.

Which coins can I buy with ZA Bank?

ZA Bank launched with Bitcoin and Ether only. Its FAQ now lists five: BTC, ETH, AVAX, LINK and SOL, available to customers in Hong Kong. You pay in HKD or USD straight from your ZA savings account, and the minimum order is HK$500 or US$60.

Is Mox crypto cheaper than ZA Bank?

Usually not for small orders. Mox is reported to charge 1.25% commission on its Basic tier and 0.5% on Elite, and trades only in USD. ZA's standard 0.8% with a HK$15 minimum is cheaper on mid-size orders, while very small orders are dearer at ZA because of the minimum fee. Neither bank allows on-chain transfers.

What is the minimum amount to buy crypto on ZA Bank?

ZA Bank's crypto page gives a minimum order of HK$500 or US$60; at launch in 2024 it was about HK$600 or US$70. Because the platform fee has a HK$15 floor, a HK$500 order effectively costs 3% to buy. Orders of about HK$1,875 or more pay the plain 0.8% rate.
