Our OSL review in two sentences: OSL is Hong Kong's longest-licensed crypto exchange, its 0% Flash Trade is one of the cheapest licensed ways to turn HKD into Bitcoin, and its OTC desk is among the largest in the city. It scores 8.2 out of 10, losing points for a short retail coin list, unpublished Pro fees and a reported HK$10,000 first deposit.
As with every page in our exchange reviews, this is an editorial assessment of published terms, not a tally of user ratings. We read the SFC register, OSL's announcements and help guides, and press coverage. Where a number only appears on aggregator sites, we flag it.
Verdict: the cheapest licensed on-ramp for the big four
First licensee, HKEX-listed parent, 0% Flash Trade, FPS/eDDA/card/Apple Pay funding and a 24/7 OTC desk. Held back by only four retail tokens, unverified Pro Trade fees and minimums, and an office address we could not confirm.
What works
- First SFC licence in Hong Kong (15 Dec 2020) and first-wave retail approval in 2023
- Flash Trade is advertised at 0% trading fees
- The widest funding menu we found at a licensed platform: FPS, eDDA, bank transfer, Visa/Mastercard and Apple Pay
- 24/7 OTC desk settling in HKD, USD, USDT and USDC, with spreads "typically within 0.5%"
- Early distributor of the HKDAP Hong Kong dollar stablecoin; brand operator for USDGO
Watch out for
- Retail can trade only BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP
- "0% fee" still means a spread; there is no price list to check it against
- Pro Trade maker/taker fees and the HK$10,000 minimum are only reported by third parties
- The widely quoted "up to US$1 billion" insurance figure is secondary-sourced
- Office address differs between directories
The scoring logic follows our hub method. Licence and transparency are strong: OSL has operated under SFC supervision longer than anyone else, and OSL Group is listed. HKD rails are excellent and include cards, which HashKey does not advertise. Total cost is good on Flash Trade if the spread is tight, but hard to measure. Withdrawal freedom is normal for a licensed platform: you can withdraw coins to a whitelisted wallet under the travel rule. The coin range is the thinnest of the big licensed names, and that is the main reason OSL sits a little below our HashKey Exchange review.
First licence, listed parent
OSL Digital Securities Limited is number one on the SFC list of licensed crypto exchanges, with CE reference BPJ213 and a licence dated 15 December 2020. That licence came under the earlier opt-in regime, before the 2023 AMLO rules made licensing compulsory for every platform serving Hong Kong. In August 2023 OSL and HashKey became the first two platforms approved to serve retail clients.
The parent is OSL Group Limited, listed on the HKEX under stock code 863. It was known as BC Technology Group until a rename in January 2024. In September 2026 OSL described itself as Hong Kong's largest platform by spot and stablecoin volume; that is a company claim we could not test. OSL also acts as the virtual asset platform and sub-custodian for some Hong Kong spot crypto ETFs, including the ChinaAMC Solana ETF listed in October 2025, which says something about how institutions view it.
Four retail tokens, and why XRP matters
Retail clients on OSL Hong Kong can trade exactly four tokens: BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP. XRP was added for retail on 29 July 2026, according to OSL's listing announcement, through Flash Trade in XRP/USD and through the OTC desk in XRP/USD and XRP/HKD. That made OSL one of the first licensed venues in the city to open XRP to ordinary investors.
Four coins is enough for most first-time buyers, who mainly want Bitcoin and Ether. If you want AVAX or LINK as a retail client, HashKey or a broker using another licensed platform may list them. Professional investors, meaning those with a portfolio of at least HK$8 million, get a longer list; one aggregator says 60 or more, which we could not confirm. And if you want small-cap tokens, no licensed Hong Kong platform will sell them to retail. That is by design.
OSL fees: Flash Trade versus Pro Trade
OSL splits trading into two products. Flash Trade is the simple buy-and-sell screen in the app, and OSL advertises it at 0% trading fees. There is no commission line, but that does not mean the trade is free. OSL quotes you a price that includes its margin, so the real cost is the gap between that quote and the market mid-price. For a HK$5,000 Bitcoin buy on a quiet afternoon that gap may be small; in a fast market it can widen. Check the quote against a live chart before you tap confirm.
Pro Trade is the order-book product for more active traders. Datawallet reported 0% maker and 0.05% taker fees, plus a 0.06% HKD–USD conversion spread, in May 2026. OSL does not publish a public fee page that we could load, so treat those as unverified.
| Product | Headline cost | What to watch | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash Trade (retail, app) | 0% trading fee advertised | The cost sits in the quoted spread — compare the price you see with the market price | OSL guide, 25 Feb 2026 |
| Pro Trade (order book) | 0% maker / 0.05% taker reported | Plus a reported 0.06% HKD–USD spread | Unverified (datawallet, May 2026) |
| OTC desk | No fixed fee; quote-based | Spreads "typically within 0.5%"; HKD, USD, USDT, USDC settlement | OSL OTC guide, 16 Mar 2026 |
| Funding | Bank transfer, FPS, eDDA, Visa/Mastercard, Apple Pay | Card routes usually cost more than FPS | OSL guide, 25 Feb 2026 |
| First deposit | HK$10,000 reported | Likely the remote-onboarding bank check | Unverified (aggregators) |
Compared with the bank apps, the difference is large. ZA Bank's published standard crypto fee is a 0.8% platform fee with a HK$15 minimum per order; Mox is reported at 1.25% commission on its basic tier. For a regular monthly buyer, Flash Trade is likely to be several times cheaper, even after a spread. Our ZA Bank crypto review works through the numbers.
A practical way to measure the Flash spread yourself: open the Flash buy screen and the sell screen for the same coin at the same moment. The gap between the two quotes, divided by two, is roughly what you pay on each side. Do it at a few different times of day and you will have a better sense of OSL's real cost than any review can give you, because spreads move with market conditions. If the gap looks wide, a Pro Trade limit order may work out cheaper, once you are comfortable with an order book.
Paying by card anyway?
If you'd rather buy by card on an international exchange, CEX.IO, founded in 2013, accepts Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay. It is registered in the US, Gibraltar and Spain but is not licensed by the SFC, so you give up Hong Kong protection.
Operating since 2013 · Card & Apple Pay · Registered in the US, Gibraltar and Spain · Why this pick?Funding and cashing out
OSL has the broadest funding menu of the licensed platforms we reviewed. According to its HKD guide, you can deposit by bank transfer, FPS, eDDA, Visa or Mastercard, and Apple Pay, in both HKD and USD. The same guide notes that some banks, such as BOCHK, waive fees on FPS deposits. Cards are the convenient option but usually cost more, and some issuers block crypto merchant codes. HSBC blocks crypto purchases on its credit cards globally.
Aggregators report an HK$10,000 minimum first deposit, which we could not find on OSL's own pages. The number matches the bank-verification transfer used in remote onboarding across licensed platforms, so expect something similar. For cashing out, you sell to HKD or USD and withdraw to a bank account in your own name. Our guide to selling crypto for HKD explains why a licensed platform is the lowest-risk way to do that. If you plan to move coins to self-custody, the crypto wallets guide covers whitelisting and network choice.
OTC desk, USDGO and HKDAP
OSL's OTC desk is where the platform really stands out. It runs 24/7 on a request-for-quote basis and settles in real time in HKD, USD, USDT and USDC. OSL says spreads are typically within 0.5% and calls it the largest OTC desk in Hong Kong. Minimums are not published, and most pairs are for professional and institutional clients, though some, like XRP/HKD, are open to retail. For anyone moving six or seven figures, a licensed desk is a far safer choice than a walk-in shop; our crypto OTC guide compares the options.
OSL is also active in stablecoins. In February 2026 it launched USDGO, a US dollar stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, with OSL as brand operator and distributor. In August 2026 it was named one of the first distributors of HKDAP, the Anchorpoint Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, which is still in its institutional beta phase. The USDT to HKD guide explains where these fit.
Custody, insurance and the office question
OSL's custody is reported to hold SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, and SFC rules require most client assets to be held in cold storage by the platform's custody arm. Insurance "up to US$1 billion" is widely repeated in the press, including crypto.news in July 2026, but we did not find the policy terms, so we treat the figure as secondary and not a reason to choose OSL on its own.
The office address is less clear than it should be. Company databases list 39/F Lee Garden One, 33 Hysan Avenue, in Causeway Bay, while at least one directory places OSL in Quarry Bay. We could not confirm either with OSL. Either way, it is not a walk-in service point.
Who OSL suits, and who should skip it
OSL suits you if you only want the majors, want the cheapest licensed quote for regular HKD buys, or like the idea of topping up by card or Apple Pay inside a licensed app. It also suits larger buyers who want an OTC desk with HKD and stablecoin settlement.
Skip OSL if you want AVAX, LINK or anything beyond the four retail tokens, or if you want a public fee sheet you can check line by line. If you mainly trade stocks and want crypto in the same app, a broker like Futu or Tiger may fit better. And if you need coins right now without a bank transfer, the quickest way to buy crypto page compares every route.
How to open an OSL account
- Download the OSL appInstall it from the App Store or Google Play and check the developer name, or start at osl.com/hk-en.
- Register and verifySign up with your email or phone, upload your HKID or passport and complete the selfie check.
- Pass the knowledge testAnswer the SFC-required virtual asset knowledge and risk questions; these unlock retail trading.
- Fund your accountUse FPS or eDDA for HKD. Expect the first deposit from a new bank account to be a verification transfer, reported at HK$10,000.
- Buy with Flash TradeChoose BTC, ETH, SOL or XRP, compare the quote with the market price and confirm. Test a small withdrawal before moving larger sums.
Only four coins not enough?
International exchanges list hundreds of pairs and accept cards. They are not SFC-licensed, so weigh the wider choice against losing Hong Kong investor protection.

Frequently asked questions
Is OSL licensed by the SFC?
Yes. OSL Digital Securities Limited received Hong Kong's very first virtual asset trading platform licence from the SFC on 15 Dec 2020 (CE ref BPJ213), and it was one of the first two platforms cleared for retail investors in 2023. Its parent, OSL Group, is listed on the HKEX under stock code 863.
Is OSL Flash Trade really free?
OSL advertises 0% trading fees on Flash Trade, and there is no separate commission line. The cost is built into the price quote, so the rate you get is slightly worse than the mid-market price. Compare the Flash quote with a live BTC/USD chart before confirming, especially for larger orders or during volatile moments.
Which coins can retail investors buy on OSL?
Retail clients can trade four tokens on OSL Hong Kong: Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP. XRP opened to retail on 29 Jul 2026 through Flash Trade (XRP/USD) and the OTC desk (XRP/USD and XRP/HKD). Professional investors with at least HK$8 million in portfolio can access a longer list.
What is the minimum deposit for OSL in Hong Kong?
Several comparison sites report an HK$10,000 minimum first deposit, but we could not find it stated on OSL's own pages. As with other licensed platforms, a first transfer of that size is often part of verifying your bank account during remote onboarding. Check the current requirement in the OSL app before sending money.
Does OSL have an OTC desk for large trades?
Yes. OSL runs a 24/7 request-for-quote OTC desk that settles in HKD, USD, USDT and USDC, and says spreads are typically within 0.5%. Most OTC pairs are for professional and institutional clients, but some, such as XRP/HKD, are open to retail. Minimum trade sizes are not published.
Where is OSL's office in Hong Kong?
Company databases list OSL at 39/F Lee Garden One, 33 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, but other directories show Quarry Bay, and we could not confirm the address with OSL. It is an office, not a walk-in counter. Account opening, deposits and support all run through the app and website.

Want coins OSL does not list for retail?
OSL gives retail four tokens. An international exchange offers far more pairs by card, but it is not SFC-licensed and carries no Hong Kong investor protection.
